My Father, Jimmie and I travelled the Alzheimer Journey together from 1998 to 2003. I have always wanted to honour his memory with a goal that would stretch me the way his dementia changed his life. I have chosen to cycle the 800 km Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain. That’s quite a feat for a non-athletic type like me!
I am not only doing this in his honour but also for the 70,000 British Columbians diagnosed with a dementia who are presently on their own journeys. I want to keep these people in my thoughts as I follow my goals for training, fundraising, and the actual ride. (Click the image above for the full picture of me, my dad and my sister, Deirdre.)
The Camino de Santiago de Compostela, also known in English as The Way of St James, is a collection of old pilgrimage routes which cover all of Europe - but which all have Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain as their final destination. For more than 1,000 years pilgrims have been walking along the Camino de Santiago.
Over 21 days in September of 2011, I'm going to cycle 800 km in Spain from Roncesvalles to Santiago de Compostela to raise funds to support the work of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. Please consider helping me reach my goal of $10,000.00.
